River Huerva master plan review

SERS carried out the review and updating of the master plan for the river Huerva, Zaragoza City Council's strategic instrument for guiding the recovery, urban integration and future management of the river and the spaces along its course. The work forms part of the BIREPAPAH project, aimed at improving biodiversity through landscape and hydromorphological restoration and the renaturalisation of the river environment.

The update starts from the master plan approved in 2012 and incorporates the new criteria of river restoration, ecological connectivity, biodiversity conservation, adaptation to climate change and flood risk management, as well as the renaturalisation works carried out under the BIREPAPAH project.

The work includes an updated diagnosis of the physical, ecological and functional state of the river and its surroundings, the assessment of the actions taken since the original plan was approved and the definition of new lines of intervention, ranked according to their priority and impact. The aim is to consolidate the Huerva as a green and blue corridor fully integrated into the urban structure of Zaragoza, encouraging ecological continuity, the recovery of riverside habitats, the improvement of public space and people's relationship with the river.

The new plan also incorporates a system of monitoring and evaluation indicators that makes it possible to assess how biodiversity, green infrastructure, urban permeability and other environmental parameters evolve, becoming a dynamic tool to guide future municipal action on the river Huerva.
